For the first time in 30 years, Lyle and Erick Menendez tell their story together in “The Menendez Brothers,” a documentary that will be released on Netflix on Monday, October 7.
Alejandro Hartmann, who directed the film, compiled several decades of archives from the lives of Lyle and Erik Menendez, born into a wealthy American family whose double murder was attributed by the prosecution to their desire to recover the inheritance family, while they claim to have been sexually abused by their father, with the agreement of their mother for years.
From their prison in Donovan, San Diego County, California, The Menendez Brothers speak over the phone, while the real protagonists of the case (like the prosecutor) will also give their point of view.
The documentary will also explore the recent TikTok movement which aims to push for the release of the two brothers, demanding that this crime be examined with fresh eyes. “People ask us all the time why we killed our parents… Maybe now people will understand the truth!”
Lyle and Erik Menendez became infamous in 1989, when they murdered their parents with shotguns in their Beverly Hills mansion.
The two young people, then aged 21 and 18, initially claimed to have discovered the bodies. The investigation initially focused on a mafia crime but, six months later, the two boys were arrested and charged – on the basis of a confession recorded by their psychologist, as reported by Time Magazine.
Accused of having killed their parents to receive the inheritance, they assured on the contrary to have acted in self-defense, after years of sexual abuse and psychological violence. They were ultimately sentenced to life in prison in 1996, without the possibility of parole. They are currently serving their sentences in a San Diego prison.
