“Beauty belongs to everyone”: the 500th micro-madness brings art to Fleury-Mérogis prison

While their cellmates are walking in the guarded courtyard, Nazo (first names have been changed)Omar and Medhi preferred to wander virtually through different museums. Among the collections explored, an almost obligatory stop at the Mona Lisa. By zooming in on Leonardo da Vinci’s work, they learn a detail that many visitors to the Louvre miss: it has no eyebrows. These three prisoners had the privilege of discovering in preview, this Friday October 4, the digital museum called micro-folie, installed at the Fleury-Mérogis penitentiary center (Essonne), the largest prison in Europe with currently 4,350 people detained, i.e. an occupancy rate of 156%.

“This micro-madness is the 500th,” rejoices Blanca Li, Spanish choreographer and president of the Public Establishment of the Park and the Grande Halle de la Villette, present at the inauguration. And the very first in a prison: quite a symbol. Because our vocation is to develop cultural actions with distant audiences, such as the penal population who have the right to be introduced to different forms of art. »
