From singers to “instapoets”, the return to favor of poetry

INVESTIGATION – Moving from the microphone to the pen, French artists, among others, perpetuate the tradition of singer-poets with increasing success. To the point of supplanting contemporary and classic authors in the best-seller charts.

Arthur Teboul and Karine Tuil are in the ranking of best sellers of poetry collections. One sings, the other doesn’t. In the small world of rhymes, where the weight of numbers does not equal that of words, this fact seems to have no importance. It remains, according to publishing figures, that singer-songwriters are more likely to appear at the top of the charts than others. Note, among recent publications, Primitive colors (Points Poésie, November 2023), by Jeanne Cherhal, The Beautiful Days and the Others (Seghers, April 2024), by Julien Baer and Philippe Katerine, or even Alive (Seghers, May 2024), by Clara Ysé. Are they doomed to the same fate as The Weir (Seghers, March 2023)?

As revealed by the said ranking of the GfK firm, transmitted to the Figarothe work of the leader of the group Feu! Chatterton rose to fifth position among the best sales of collections in 2023, ahead of the reissue ofA season in hell (Gallimard)…
