Chris Brown, J. Cole and Sexyy Red: stars call on this young Quebecer for their music videos

At only 24 years old, Philippe Gosselin signs his second collaboration on a music video for the popular American rapper Sexyy Red, in addition to having already lent his talents to other stars of the industry such as Chris Brown and J. Cole.

Le Jumper, visual artist name of Montrealer Philippe Gosselin, probably means nothing to you. However, in recent months, we have seen this name appear in the credits of music videos from Hmmmde Chris Brown, Crocrodile Tearzby J. Cole, and Get It Sexyyby Sexyy Red, which has nearly 27 million views on YouTube.

The Quebecer’s last big move? The Sexyy Red team asked him again, this time to work on some visual effects for the music video for U Kno What To Dowhich has already had 180,000 views since its publication on October 2.

“As a rap fan, I am really proud of what I accomplish and to have the chance to work with artists that I have listened to since adolescence,” rejoices Philippe Gosselin, in an interview with The Journal. “The work requires not only a technical aspect, but also an artistic one,” he notes, adding at the same time that he is given great creative freedom when his services are called upon.

Under the wing of another Quebecer

A graduate of the School of Digital Arts, Animation and Design at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi, Philippe Gosselin first built a fine reputation in his field at the turn of the pandemic, notably by working on the visuals of Quebec MCs like Aswell, Shreez and Tizzo.

Looking to break into the American market, he flew to California, where he met up-and-coming rapper Yung Pinch. A tour and a few video clips with him allowed him to be noticed by the renowned Quebec videographer Zacksta, already well established on the other side of the border.

“He introduced me to the Apollo post-production agency in Los Angeles and invited me to work on the music video for Nightmaresfor Chris Brown,” recalls Gosselin, who describes himself as a 3D generalist. “Zacksta was a great example for me and he quickly became a friend.”

With the Apollo agency, Philippe Gosselin had the chance to work on visual effects for advertisements for Under Armor and Movado watchmaking.

Calm in the face of artificial intelligence

A rising star in his field, Le Jumper does not yet live with the fear of seeing his rise slowed down by the evolution of artificial intelligence software.

“For now, it’s a great tool that can save us time. But the quality is still far from being good enough to completely replace human labor,” he emphasizes.
