“Christine Binswanger: Herzog & de Meuron, working with artists”, Common Spaces conference, Wednesday October 9, 2024 at 6:30 p.m., MCBA Auditorium, Plateforme 10, Lausanne, plateforme10.ch | mcba.ch| foundationcub.ch | dra5.ch

When she passes between the boards and tables littered with models of the Basel “campus”, the architects greet her with respect, she stops here and there for a little conversation. Christine Binswanger is one of the oldest and certainly one of the most influential collaborators of the agency founded in 1978 by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. His sound judgment is sought after – from junior members of his project teams to international competition juries.

Today, the agency has more than 500 employees, led by 16 partners, including the founders – including only two women. This imbalance became evident when Esther Zumsteg decided to concentrate on her role as director of the Kabinett. “Unfortunately, we have not managed to integrate more women into the group of partners, despite the profound evolution of our environment,” she admits. The world of work has changed, even in this environment where passion easily outweighed the timesheet. Today, the agency no longer requires boundless commitment from its teams. But Christine Binswanger admits to sometimes regretting the intensity of the Sundays spent on her models.
