60 years of Belgian-Moroccan migration celebrated through art – Telquel.ma

Cth project titled “From migration to culture: Moussem Belgica – Transnational stories, 60 years of migration through art and culture”will take place in Tangier from October 4 to 25, 2024 and in Oujda from November 1 to 30, 2024.

According to the press release, the initiative aims to highlight “the evolution of Moroccans of transnational origin through the prism of art and culture”. It provides a platform to 17 artists with Moroccan roots whose works have been influenced by their transnational experiences.

The program includes visual arts exhibitions, literary meetings and film screenings. “These screenings will be an opportunity to explore in depth contemporary cinema and its diverse and varied narrative and visual approaches which shed light on the different experiences and perspectives within the Belgian-Moroccan community,” specifies the press release.

A notable aspect of the event is the publication of two books. The first, entitled Moussem Belgica – Transnational Historiesoffers an overview of the stories brought by these transnational artists. The second is a French translation of the novel Tell someone by Rachida Lamrabet, the first Belgian writer of Moroccan origin to publish in Dutch.

Mohamed Ikoubaân, a key figure in the organization, underlines the importance of these translations: “The works of Moroccans around the world must be translated and published, and I hope that others will follow our example, with translations into Arabic as well,” he writes in Moussem Belgica – Transnational Stories.

The press release adds that for some participants, this will be the first time that they will exhibit their work in Morocco, “a milestone in their artistic career”.

This event, supported by various Belgian and Moroccan institutions, promises to be a rich and diverse celebration of the cultural heritage resulting from six decades of migration between Belgium and Morocco.
