The Marvels: the most expensive film and biggest flop of all time

A strategy that is not without risk. The proof with The Marvel. According to Forbes, for the film led by Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Tessa Thompson and Teyonah Parris, Disney would have spent a budget of 270 million dollars, to which must be added 110 million in marketing costs, 21 million in distribution costs and 54 millions in overheads and interest. That’s a total of $455 million. Record of Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($447 million) defeated.

A colossal expense which would not pose any problem if the income had followed. But that’s not the case at all. Worldwide revenues amount to $206 million (half of which goes to the studio…), and taking into account sales, rentals, streaming rights, Disney’s revenues for this film would total $218 million. of dollars. Which leaves a hole of 237 million in the coffers. Here too, it’s unheard of since to date, another Disney production, John Carterheld the record for losses with 200 million dollars.

Data that is dizzying, but does not seem to have discouraged the major studios from betting ever more heavily on major, very expensive shows, even if it means having to wipe out from time to time a few “air gaps” like The Marvels. Time will tell whether they were right or not.
