The story. We are in Lisbon, in November 1935. The poet Fernando Pessoa is dying. We saw him come out of the doctor’s office coughing until he was tearing his lungs apart. The rumor spreads throughout Lisbon. And you know what we’re doing in the media at the time? We are preparing the obituary. Not the most exciting part of the job but you have to anticipate.

In the corridors of a major Portuguese daily, the editor-in-chief tasks a young journalist with preparing the article. Except that for this young freelancer, Pessoa, that doesn’t mean much to him. So he sets out to meet people who know him. His loved ones. Those who have already interviewed him. Those who encounter him on a daily basis. And he will discover that Pessoa is not just this shy little man, with a slightly sad look behind his big black glasses. But he is a relentless writer who throughout his life published under many other names. At least 70: Alvaro Campos, Bernardo Soares, Alberto Caiero… It’s a fascinating comic book that reads like a thriller.

Nicolas Barral devoted almost four years to this book. He carried out biographical research to recreate in drawings the atmosphere of Lisbon in the 1930s.
