The Finnish film Je’vida Grand Prize at the Salé International Women’s Film Festival

The Finnish film “Je’vida”, directed by Katja Gauriloff, won the Grand Prize at the 17th Salé International Women’s Film Festival (FIFFS), which closed on Saturday evening. The feature film was crowned by a jury chaired by Moroccan director Maryam Touzani. It addresses a major topical theme, that of the protection of cultural diversity embodied by the heritage of indigenous peoples.

Through the story of the character Je’vida, the film immerses the audience in the daily life of a linguistic and cultural community in northern Finland, threatened with disappearance after being subjected to forced assimilation policies.

The film “Animal”, by Greek director Sofia Exarchou, won the Jury Prize and that of best female role, awarded to actress Dímitra Vlagopoúlou. The Best Male Role Award was won by Moroccan actor Khalil Oubaaqa, for his role in the film “Triple A”, by Moroccan director Jihane El Bahar.

The First Work Prize was awarded to “Good One” by India Donaldson, while “Foreign Language” by French director Claire Burger received a special mention from the jury. Regarding the documentary film category, the Grand Prize was won by “L’Homme-Vertige”, by Malaury Eloi Paisley, while a special mention was awarded to the film “The Empty Grave”, by Agnes Lisa Wegner and Cece Mlay.

Furthermore, Moroccan director Moulay Taieb Bouhanana (Sahari, Slem Wesaa) won the Audience Award for the feature film category, while the Audience Award for the short film went to “What else grows on the palm of your hand?” by Dhiaa Biya. In addition, the Prix de l’autre rive was won by “Triple A” by Jihane El Bahar.

Organized from September 23 to 28 by the Bouregreg Association, the FIFFS represents an opportunity for women filmmakers of all geographic origins, Arab, African and international, to debate issues related to this profession, to share their experiences and expertise, and to discuss the condition of women through film productions.
