What we know about the musical adapted from the film by Mathieu Kassovitz

This show, which combines dance, cinema, rap, theatre and live performance, is supported by an original soundtrack – with Akhenaton, Oxmo Puccino and M – which creates a link between the 90s and today.

The big day is approaching. As the musical Hatred – So far nothing has changed , adapted from the cult film by Mathieu Kassovitz will be making its debut on stage from October 10 at the Seine Musicale, here is what we know about this highly anticipated show for the end of the year.

Show that “nothing has changed”

With Hate -So far nothing has changedMathieu Kassovitz is back with a lively and immersive creation. And the goal of the 57-year-old actor, director and screenwriter is clear. He wants to revisit his film released in 1995, which has become a true classic of French cinema, to highlight its current and timeless character and show that ultimately, « nothing has changed ». In the original work, the viewer follows the story of three young residents of the Muguets estate in Yvelines, when a riot breaks out following the beating of a sixteen-year-old boy by a police inspector. A theme that still resonates today.

« We are not just here to keep alive a film that is part of our culture »explains Mathieu Kassovitz on Monday, September 9, on France Inter. « The social context still exists despite everything. There are still police blunders »underlines the director, who indicates that he made his musical comedy project official two days before the death of young Nahel, killed by a policeman. « If we say that nothing has changed, it is because unfortunately there are still police blunders and problems in these neighborhoods. »he insists.

This musical comedy, mixing dance, cinema, rap, theatre and live performance, according to the description provided by La Seine Musicale, aims to immerse the spectator in a « ride » across Paris and its suburbs. « We are here to respect what we created thirty years ago, a reflection on violence, on the relationship between the citizen, the police and the State, a reflection also on hatred and love. », adds Mathieu Kassovitz for France Inter.

Mixing musical comedy and cinema

This musical also aims to make « dialogue between the scene and the screen ». For the occasion, fourteen tableaux inspired by the film but redesigned by Mathieu Kassovitz, will be broadcast on a projection system, coupled with the sets and especially with the performance of the actors on stage. Alexander Ferrario will play the character of Vinz, played in the film by Vincent Cassel, Samy Belkessa will play the young Saïd, a role originally played by Saïd Taghmaouï and Alivor will play Hubert, formerly played by Hubert Koundé. In total, this show should mobilize around thirty dancers, singers and actors.

An original soundtrack

But this musical, which will be performed all over France, also promises an original soundtrack, which links the 1990s to today. About fifteen songs have been designed. Mathieu Kassovitz also revealed that he worked with « beautiful world ». « We have old ones: Akhenaton, Oxmo Puccino, Tunisiano. We have Mercer, who does a remix of Bob Marley. We have The Blade. We have Mathieu Chedid with Angélique Kidjo, Chico from the Gipsy Kings » he said on France Inter this Monday. « There are special things »he added. « Youssoupha wrote us two songs (…), the most violent of the show. We have love songs, electro, songs, hardcore rap. »

“Answer all questions”

Finally, with this musical, the director promises to « answer all questions » that viewers may ask themselves after seeing the 1995 film. « You want to know who is the one … »he told the newspaper Provence in February.
