British press relieved after announcement of end of chemotherapy

From the Daily Telegraph to the Sun, all the newspapers in the United Kingdom are celebrating this Tuesday, September 10, the announcement of the end of Kate Middleton’s chemotherapy treatment, six months after revealing that she had cancer.

Back in the headlines. British dailies are celebrating the end of Kate Middleton’s chemotherapy on Tuesday, September 10. The day before, the Princess of Wales announced that she had just finished her treatment and that she would resume her public activities “in the coming months when I can.”

“My road to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” she added in a statement, accompanied by a family video on social media.

“A powerful message of hope”

The video, in which the princess is dressed in a light dress with her hair blowing in the wind, was filmed in August in Norfolk, in the east of England. It conveys the image of a united and happy family, picnicking, playing cards. Kate smiles, resting on her husband’s shoulder.

A message applauded by newspapers in the United Kingdom. “Your kindness is a lesson in humility… from darkness can emerge light”, is the headline of the Daily Express, repeating the words of the Princess of Wales in her video, described as “moving” by the tabloid. Same quote on the front page of the Daily Mail, which hails “a powerful message of hope”, as does the Daily Mirror.

The Sun reprinted a screenshot showing Kate Middleton, Prince William and their children and called the princess’s message “the most intimate royal video ever published.”

As for the Guardian, it is one of the few newspapers with the Daily Telegraph to split its front page in two, highlighting the government’s decision to cut heating subsidies this winter. The royal family is in the spotlight with the same screenshot of Kate, William and their children.

The Daily Telegraph makes the same choice, but places at the top of its front page, in full width, the photo of the royal family.

After announcing her cancer in March, Kate made her first public appearance on June 15 at Charles III’s birthday parade, waving to the crowd from the balcony of Buckingham Palace alongside the royal family.

Prince William’s wife was then warmly cheered by the public who came in large numbers to attend the military parade “Trooping the Colour” (“Salute to the colours”) organized every June. Her last public appearance was at the beginning of July at Wimbledon, where she presented the trophy to the winner of the tennis tournament, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. There again, she was applauded at length.
