THE MORNING LIST

The rearview mirror is the accessory of the week: first to look back at the history of a classic, with its creator; then to retrace, once again, the steps of a criminal in the company of Charles, Mabel and Oliver; finally to rediscover the slightly old-fashioned pleasure of the historical series in public service style.

“Wise Guy. David Chase and The Sopranos”: Behind the Scenes of “The Best Show Ever”

Although he may not like to talk about himself, it is with reserved amiability that David Chase answers questions from documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney for Wise Guya documentary event produced by HBO on the series that made it the channel to be on. From Chase’s childhood in New Jersey to the filming of the pilot of Sopranothrough his discovery of Godard’s cinema at university and his tumultuous relationship with his mother, Wise Guy draws the genealogy of a matrix series for “prestige TV”, a popular success from its first season (unlike its rival from Baltimore, The Wire) and regularly placed at the top of the rankings of the best series of all time.

Rich in the confidences of David Chase, but also the testimony of the HBO executives who made the series possible and the actors who played the characters, this two-part documentary also highlights a decisive moment in American television, which saw the emergence of the greats showrunners and designed a space of freedom and creativity in an environment that is usually very constrained from an economic point of view. Above all, it is intended for fans of the series (beware, spoilers!), Wise Guy is also the portrait of a “tormented man” (as the journalist Brett Martin would designate the heroes of the great series of the 2000s as well as their creators), torn between his cinematic ambitions and his talent for the series, but who had the wisdom to occupy the field on which he was best. A wise guycertainly. Me. F.

Documentary by Alex Gibney (EU, 2024, 2 × 80 min). On demand on Max.

« Only Murders in the Building » : les podcasters détectives sous les sunlights

Seeing our favorite trio of detective podcasters bolt for Hollywood in the first episode, we wonder how this fourth season will be able to stay true to the title of the series: only murders committed in one building, the Arconia in this case, a huge building on New York’s Upper West Side. This Californian excursion remains brief, just enough time for Charles-Haden Savage, the uptight actor (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam, the narcissistic producer (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora, the young, almost depressed artist (Selena Gomez) to get to know the Hollywood stars who will play them on screen. Namely Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria.
