It is not yet inaugurated that already, the critics fuse. As part of a partnership with the municipality of Monopoli (Puglia), students from the “Luigi Rosso” artistic high school have created a sculpture. The work, which represents a mermaid, is to be unveiled soon on Place Rita Levi Montalcini, next to a playground. The objective is to “enhance the public spaces of the city through the installation of works of art produced as part of the educational activities of the institute”, can we read on the school’s website.
Baptized “The Sea”, the work does not seem to be unanimous among Internet users, says TGCOM 24. Thursday on Facebook, Italian actress Tiziana Schiavarelli published photos of the statue and expressed her “perplexity”. “At first glance, (…) it looks like a mermaid with two silicone breasts which would be worth a denunciation to the surgeon. And above all, we have never seen a mermaid with such a huge ass,” laughs the actress.
She added that she did not want to offend the authors of the work, nor the municipality. “Who knows, maybe it will become one more tourist attraction,” she wrote. For his part, the director of the school defended the work of his students, believing that the sculpture constituted a “tribute to women, beautiful even with curves”. “We’ve had enough of models of the perfect woman,” added Adolfo Marciano. Pending its inauguration scheduled for Tuesday, the statue has been covered.
