Did you know? Depending on the time of the meal, the napkin should not be placed in the same place!

Shaped like a Christmas tree or surrounded by a circle, the napkin is as essential as cutlery or glasses. Usually placed in the center of the plates, it provides a decorative element while being practical. However, it should not always be placed there. Good manners involve adapting the location of the napkin to the meal time to entertain properly.

French table setting involves using only cloth napkins and placing them differently. If the meal is at noon, the napkin should be placed in the center of the plate. On the other hand, if the reception is in the evening or you are hosting for dinner, it will be placed to the left of the plate. This rule only applies if the cutlery used is only a knife and a fork. Note that it is possible to place the napkin on the right of the plate for dinner if the cutlery is rolled up inside the cloth.

However, the rules of dressing do not only apply to receptions, festive dinners or events such as a wedding. For everyday meals, the napkin can be placed anywhere. But it is still recommended to opt for cloth napkins, which are more efficient and more environmentally friendly.
