In Rennes, for Georges, architecture is everyone’s business

Demanding and accessible

Georges, a funny name for a festival. For an architect, the reference is clear: the organizing team salutes Georges Maillols, the architect who shaped post-war Rennes with, in particular, the Tour des Horizons. The nod stops there. Because Georges is an architecture festival, focused on the challenges of today and tomorrow, whose raison d’être is to address all audiences, beyond the circle of professionals. “Architecture organizes space and territory, notes Valentin Engasser, one of the five architects who volunteer to serve as Georges’ artistic director. “It is part of our daily lives. It cannot be reduced to a matter for specialists.” Building on the success of the first edition in 2022, the festival returns from September 19 to October 6 with a program that is both “demanding and accessible”available from its headquarters at Les Halles en commun in Courrouze.

Coastline and rurality

The theme of limits was chosen for this second edition. Limit that constitutes the ring road, between urban and peri-urban. Unstable, moving limit of the coastline, shaken by climate change. “If the horizon is lost” is the title of one of the three exhibitions, hosted at the Halles en commun, the former industrial building of Courrouze, also undergoing major changes. The gaze of visual photographers illustrates this retreat of coastal limits in the face of rising waters. The future of rural towns is addressed in “Langon, a rural heritage to be awakened” and that of old buildings, such as the Couvent des Jacobins, in “A building, how many lives? Transformation as an act of creation.” “Mediators, trained to popularize the content, will be present to accompany the public in the exhibitions.” They will be visible from September 20 to October 6, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. (closed on Mondays).

Festive inauguration and closing

Georges also includes round tables, installations, workshops, tours of the city, an exhibition of portraits of Maurepas residents at the Museum of Fine Arts, etc. The inauguration, on Thursday, September 19 from 8 p.m., and the Georges ball to close, on Friday, October 4, from 7 p.m., will take place at Les Halles en commun. Two festive highlights, open to the public. Further information and reservations on georges-festival.com
