This Tuesday, September 3, the Académie Goncourt revealed the list of sixteen selected novels.

Gaël Faye and Kamel Daoud are among the sixteen contenders for the 2024 Goncourt Prize, launched on Tuesday by a first selection that, as always, has delighted and disappointed some. “Jacaranda” by the Franco-Rwandan, published by Grasset, and “Houris” by the Algerian, published by Gallimard, were among the most scrutinized titles. One is the second novel by an author known for the bestseller “Petit pays” in 2016, while Kamel Daoud narrowly missed out on the 2014 Goncourt for “Meursault, contre-enquête”.

Other names were quite widely expected. Maylis de Kerangal, who returns to Le Havre with “Jour de ressac” (Verticales), Philippe Jaenada, with his investigation into a suicide in “La désinvolture est une bien belle chose” (Mialet-Barrault), or Sandrine Collette, with “Madelaine avant l’aube” (JC Lattès), are regulars at literary prizes.

The daily newspaper “Le Parisien” last Sunday called for the prize to be awarded to the latter: “Our Goncourt is Sandrine Collette!” The advice will not necessarily be followed, at the end of a long race, which has had its share of twists and turns.
