Apple’s streaming platform is committing to investments in French productions for the first time.
For the first time, the video streaming platform of the American company Apple has signed an agreement with the French audiovisual industry to take “investment commitments”announced the professional organizations this Friday, January 24. Signed for four years, until December 31, 2027, “this agreement confirms Apple TV+’s desire to take a further step in its integration into the French regulatory system”commented on these professional organizations in a joint press release, without giving an amount.
The signatory organizations are the producer and distributor unions AnimFrance, Satev, Sedpa, Spi and Uspa, as well as the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers (SACD). According to them, the agreement “aims for Apple TV+ to devote its investment in audiovisual works in France to heritage productions (fiction, animation, creative documentaries and live shows), with a strong priority given to works of original French expression and to creative independent ».
-Support the production of European works
This signature is part of a decree known as Smad (for “on-demand audiovisual media services”), which entered into force in July 2021 and which transposed a European directive. This decree subjects foreign streaming platforms to the same rules for contributing to the financing of audiovisual and cinematographic production as services established in France.
In a separate press release, Arcom, the audiovisual regulator, “rejoiced” of the agreement signed by Apple TV+. “Apple is committed to further supporting the production of European works and original French works”stressed the Arcom, saluting “the significant strengthening of Apple TV+’s commitment to animation and documentaries”. L’Arcom “calls for the signing of similar agreements in line with those already signed by Amazon, Netflix and now Apple”.
