A year and a half after its debut, Castlevania : Nocturne returns to Netflix this Thursday, January 16. Inspired by video games Rondo of Blood (1993) et Symphony of the Night (1997), this series derived from Castlevania (2017-2021) continues to explore the dark and gothic universe of the franchise from video game publisher Konami. Created by Clive Bradley and produced by Powerhouse Animation, it stood out – like the initial show – for its narrative and visual quality.

A series between history and fantasy
Set in 1792, during the French Revolution, the first season of Nocturne introduces Richter Belmont, a young vampire hunter, Maria Renard, an idealistic magician, and Annette, a former slave turned voodoo witch. Together, they face Erzsebet Báthory, a vampire queen seeking to unleash the forces of Sekhmet, Egyptian goddess of chaos. As Paris burns, this unlikely alliance struggles to fend off an impending apocalypse.
In an atmosphere where historical reality and the supernatural intertwine, the first season laid the foundations: Erzsebet gains power by absorbing the powers of Sekhmet, while Richter struggles to assert his role as leader and master the legendary whip, the Vampire Killer. The heroes’ failure against Erzsebet leaves Paris at the mercy of an army of vampires and demons, raising the stakes for the future.
Stakes amplified in the second part
The second season promises eight new episodes full of action and twists. As Erzsebet attempts to obtain the final artifact needed to reach full power, Richter, Maria, Annette and Alucard join forces to stop him. The battle for Paris intensifies, with more strategic clashes and increased dramatic tension.
Recently unveiled, the trailer revealed a Paris plunged into chaos, with supernatural creatures spreading terror. Alucard, already central in the original series, plays a crucial role in the heroes’ strategy, while the relationships between the characters gain in complexity.
A faithful, but daring adaptation
Drawing inspiration from franchise classics, Castlevania : Nocturne takes liberties to enrich the plot and flesh out the characters. The revolutionary context gives a social resonance to the story, where vampires represent the oppressive aristocracy. This historical parallel reinforces the narrative impact, while maintaining the dark, gothic tone that has won over fans.
