Adaptations of video games into films are on the rise and, although the quality of the latter varies, we are seeing a general increase in ambitions and levels. However, this type of project remains difficult to implement and we have once again proof of this.

Video games in cinema: a potential windfall but also a real financial risk

Video games have been eyeing cinema for a long time and it is now cinema which takes over interactive media. In recent years, and thanks to the full integration of video games into popular culture, many directors have transformed certain titles into appreciable films or series. After the successes of Sonic, Super Mario Bros, The Last of Us and Falloutmany projects have been started. Mass Effect, Horizon, God of War, The Legend of Zelda… So many franchises soon on the small and big screen.

Video games are seducing Hollywood and we should be entitled to many productions in the years to come. However, it is not enough to say “video game” for a film or series to come to life. In 2012, players were able to discover Sleeping Dogs, a GTA-Like which has a strong focus on Hong Kong action cinema.

Full of faults, However, it was a success and the Definitive Edition made it a more than appreciable title.. Published by Square Enix, the title attracted the attention of Hollywood in 2012, giving birth to an adaptation project in 2017. We quickly learned that Donnie Yena well-known and recognized action film actor, was chosen to play Wei Shen, the main protagonist.

Eternal rest for Sleepin Dogs the Movie

And since then? Radio silence. At least until recently, because during an interview with Polygon, Donnie Yen said the project was considered “dead”. More than 7 years after its announcement, the film Sleeping Dogs would therefore have been canceled. He also confided that he had himself invested his money in this projectbut despite this, the film is now buried.

I spent a lot of time and a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money to get the projects and some of the rights. I waited years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how Hollywood works, right? I spent many, many years on this project. It was an unfortunate thing. Well, let’s move on to better things.

We were talking about success for the game Sleeping Dogs and it’s true. However, the approximately 2.3 million copies sold were not sufficient in the eyes of Square Enix for a sequel to see the light of day. Four years after the release of Sleeping Dogs, the studio United Front Games has unfortunately closed the doornot without having worked on LittleBigPlanet Karting, Tomb Raider : Definitive Edition, Halo : The Master Chief Collection et Disney Infinity 3.0. At the time of the shutdown, three titles were canceled: Triad Wars, Sleeping Dogs 2 and Smash+Grab. The latter was released in early access on Steam less than a month before the closure.
