March 13, 2007 marked the date of the last broadcast of Stargate SG-1. A real blow for fans of the science fiction series who have long wondered why it had not been renewed for an eleventh season.

All good things must come to an end. After ten years of broadcasting, Sci Fi Channel had chosen not to renew Stargate SG-1 for an eleventh salvo. A piece of news that immediately caused a reaction from fans as well as actors in the series, starting with Michael Shanks. “We found out a few days before the general public that the show was going to be canceled, and it’s really hard to be really mad. The word canceled is kind of weird. The show isn’t being renewed, but it’s something that’s been on our minds for a few years. We’re going to have to deal with it, but I think we had a lot of fun, and that’s why it’s hard for me to be mad.”he said.

Stargate SG-1 : Ratings not the reason for the sci-fi series’ cancellation

While fans have long believed that declining ratings were the reason why Stargate SG-1 had been canceled, Mark Stern, former executive vice president of original programming at Sci Fi Channel, revealed to Variety that it was not the case. The cancellation was not decided based on the ratings. We are leaving on a positive notehe told the American media outlet. He nevertheless specified that the channel, now called Syfy, had given enough time to the teams and actors to properly wrap up the plots.

Stargate: The science fiction franchise continued with two more spin-offs

The end of Stargate SG-1 did not sign the end of its spin-offs which lasted several seasons before they were also canceled. Michael Shanks, who played Dr. Daniel Jackson, had no trouble reprising his role in Stargate Atlantis et Stargate Universe. Amanda Tapping (Samantha Carter), Gary Jones (Walter Harriman), Bill Dow (Bill Jones) and Martin Christopher (Kevin Marks) are also among those who have agreed to make appearances in the other two spin-offs, as is Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O’Neill).
