As Demi Moore pour The Susbtance or Mikey Madison pour AnoraNicole Kidman is one of this season’s big favorites, thanks to her stunning interpretation of Romy in Babygirl (in theaters January 15). She plays a CEO charmed by Samuel (Harris Dickinson), an intern who turns his daily life upside down by allowing him to satisfy his BDSM fantasies. Already crowned Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and the Palm Springs Festival, she is unanimously acclaimed thanks to this ultra-bold and disturbing interpretation in a film which rightly questions the notion of power, female sexuality and the perception of age. So, to receive her new award at the National Board of Review gala, she paid tribute to a key scene from Babygirl – without spoiling anything, since it is available in the trailer.
We see Romy drinking a large glass of milk in one go, in a bar. At first surprised to have milk brought to her by the waiter, she understands that it was ordered by Samuel, who stares at her for a long time, a few meters away. Gaze fixed on his, she takes on an air of defiance and finishes her glass without flinching, before wiping the corner of her lips. In the film, this scene is a tipping point for their relationship, which is as torrid as it is tortuous.
When sensuality and humor spark
Even before the release of Babygirlthis sequence caused a stir among moviegoers who speculated on its context and took great joy in reinterpreting it in their own way, in video, memes and subtly erotic puns shared on social networks. Faced with the phenomenon, Nicole Kidman punctuated her acceptance speech with a toast to “all babygirls present in the room”… and drinking a large glass of milk in a few seconds. And the actress concludes, with a mischievous air: “Good girl”, another emblematic line from the film (and nickname given by Samuel to Romy).
For the occasion, Nicole Kidman wore a long black backless velvet dress from the Jean Paul Gaultier archives, with edging encrusted with stones and pearls. After her very glamorous XXL volume hairstyle at the Golden Globes this weekend, she opted for a side ponytail with a few strands let down to frame her face. Special mention for her unique earring, perfectly matched to the ornaments of her dress thanks to a fall of pearls of crazy elegance.
The director of Babygirl, Halina Reijnexplained to several media that this scene was inspired by one of his past experiences. “I was at a bar and I ordered something boring, like a Diet Coke, because I didn’t drink at the time because I was a control freak. There was also a young Belgian actor – I can’t say who he is – but he was famous. I knew who he was. I had never spoken to him. He was at least 15 years younger than me and he ordered me a glass of milk, she told Indie Wire. I found it amazing, exciting and so brave, so I wanted to congratulate him by drinking all the milk, and I did. It kind of nauseated me, to be honest with you, because it was cow’s milk. » She remembers “one of the most exciting moments” of her life.
