Two red pandas escaped from their enclosure at a zoo in Gossau (SG). Under the weight of the snow, branches of trees and bushes had broken, allowing the two females to climb the fence. They were found nearby.

(Keystone-ATS) Twin sisters, the two escapees born in 2021 have no injuries, a spokesperson for Walter Zoo in Gossau told Keystone-ATS on Wednesday. They are in good health.

The keepers found their enclosure empty last Friday. One of the two red pandas was discovered in a tree near the enclosure. The other had ventured further. The search led to the capture of the second female in a nearby forest.

“During the next snowfall, the trees, bushes and shrubs will first be cleared of snow before the two red pandas are released into the outdoor installation,” emphasizes the spokesperson.

Red pandas live in the Himalayas and in mountain ranges further east. Their species is seriously threatened.
