Lawyer in Chicago, Elsbeth Tascioni changes her life. New job, new city. She moves to New York, commissioned by the Department of Justice, to observe a police unit and support it in respecting procedures, which would prevent her past slip-ups from happening again. Suffice it to say that it is expected to be a new virus without a vaccine. But our heroine ignores the signs of distrust and annoyance towards her, especially as she secretly investigates a supposed crooked police captain.
Each episode begins with the meticulous execution of the premeditated crime, offering the viewer an exclusive look at the culprit. The police investigation is clearly not the issue of the series, it is its treatment which changes the situation and which is gripping. Worthy heir of Columbo and of MonkElsbeth endures the mockery and innuendoes of the culprit – who never sees it coming – without being crushed or failing to celebrate her insight.
Rejection of Trump’s America
A keen observer, she has the ability to unearth imperceptible clues, such as the presence of a roll of dental floss which sweeps away the evidence of a suicide. Who would chase away tartar and oral bacteria before ending their life? With these intellectual maneuvers, it will not take long to become an indispensable element of the police station, the storyline pretext of the surreptitious investigation taking a back seat.
The actress Carry Preston dons the costume of Elsbeth Tascioni for the third time with as much madness and generosity as ever. Her lawyer character created in 2010 appeared in several episodes of the series The Good Wife, then over the years in its variation The Good Fight. It is delightful to find this character who rises in rank and becomes the title role of his own series. What is even more pleasing is the loyalty to its performer even though she has passed 55 years.
This is the whole ethos of the couple of screenwriters and producers, Michelle and Robert King, who already affirmed their political convictions and their rejection of Trump’s America in their past works. In Elsbeththey do not spare American society from their critical gaze, pinpointing the dysfunctions and abuses of different environments: Broadway and the omnipotence of a director, entirely scripted money pump reality TV or even the snobbery of New York co-owners to remain among the elites.
In the main roles, fans of Treme will recognize Wendell Pierce (the trombonist Antoine Batiste) who takes on the stripes of police captain, Molly Price (New York 911) and Carra Patterson, the police officer supposed to stick to the coattails of the too curious Elsbeth. Each murderer is played by a star exfiltrated from another series, like Jesse Tyler Ferguson one of the homosexual fathers of Modern Family or Jane Krakowski the secretary inventor ofAlly McBeal.
A second season is currently being broadcast in the United States.
