The British artist was sentenced to a license suspension as well as a fine due to his “dangerous and irresponsible” conduct, according to the judge in charge of the case.
British rapper Stormzy is deprived of his driving license for 9 months, after being sentenced this Thursday, January 2 by the English courts for making a telephone call while driving his Rolls-Royce in London in March 2024. The artist, who pleaded guilty , was not present at the hearing.
The judge accused the 31-year-old rapper of “dangerous and irresponsible” conduct, before announcing the suspension of his license and a fine of 2,010 pounds sterling (2,423 euros).
Stormzy, real name Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, was arrested on March 7 in broad daylight in the upscale neighborhood of Kensington. An undercover officer knocked on his tinted window and told him:
“Get rid of the tinted windows and put down your phone,” London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told.
First warning
Stormzy was also arrested on October 17, 2023, this time driving a Lamborghini Urus, whose tinted front windows only let in 4% of light, far from the required 70%. He had already received warnings about this.
The rapper is aware of his responsibility and apologizes, said his lawyer, Peter Csemiczky. Stormzy also removed his tinted windows, he said.
Active since 2014, Stormzy has released three albums since 2017. He has collaborated with many stars, including Burna Boy, Ed Sheeran and Aya Nakamura.
