The Sweet Time

The year of the hundredth anniversary of the disappearance of Gabriel Fauré is coming to an end. Théo Fouchenneret signs on this occasion a thoughtful reading of great depth of the thirteen nights, a true musical diary spanning, from 1875 to 1921, over the entire career of the composer.

From the first, opus 33/1 written in 1875 to the thirteenth, the final piano piece by the old master composed in 1921, the Nocturnes allow us to follow the musical evolution of the author. Théo Fouchenneret builds his journey centered on the fifth, the composer’s favorite page. Ambivalent music whose apparent simplicity hides many chiaroscuros. Fouchenneret distances the first, in particular the three united under opus 33 published in 1882, the year of the composer’s marriage, from this somewhat salonardian ease which has, unfairly in our opinion, been criticized for Fauré’s first works. , as if their brilliance, their dazzling melodic profusion and the happiness they exude were reprehensible. It centers most of the cycle on the fifth and sixth, pivotal works whose Schumannian backgrounds subtly illuminate the composer’s secret lyricism. After the eighth (1902), the master’s increasing hearing difficulties will further purify his style, close his personality, down to the inner lyricism of the last nocturnals, like the last pages of this secret diary.

With this long-matured album, as evidenced by the beautiful presentation text signed by the pianist, Théo Fouchenneret signs one of the most significant tributes to this Fauré year which is coming to an end. Far from the romantic excesses of Lucas Debargue (Sony), he joins the few memorable successes of Jean-Philippe Collard (Erato) or Eric Le Sage (Alpha, recently reissued with chamber music). A modest and intense portrait of the master of Pamiers. Stunning !
