Tom Hanks’ filmography is a succession of cult films – with a few exceptions. Romantic comedy Sleepless nights in Seattle (1993) au thriller Da Vinci Codes (2006), through the comedy-drama Forrest Gump (1994), the war film We must save Private Ryan (1998) or the drama The green line (1999), he crossed (almost) all genres – apart from the superhero films which he hates – with flying colors. But we often forget that he also played in a few science fiction films. One of them, although little known, is one of the best films of his career, according to him.

Tom Hanks indeed considers Cloud Atlas (2012), sisters Lilly and Lana Wachowski (Matrix) and Tom Tykweras one of his greatest successes – despite the commercial failure of the film, which only earned $130 million at the box office on a budget of $150 million. The film, adaptation of the novel Cloud mapping (2004), by David Mitchell, tells six distinct stories in different places and timesplayed by the same actors, including Tom Hanks, but also Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, who considers that the film saved his career, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Wishaw and even Susan Sarando.

An experience “magic

In The Bill Simmons PodcastTom Hanks was asked about his favorite films. If he loved playing baseball and eating well for An extraordinary team (1992) and swim every morning to get to the island where it was filmed Alone in the world (2000), he cites above all Cloud Atlas (2012) as one of his “best memories from filming“.

>> Tom Hanks admits that this is the worst film of his career and one of the worst in cinema history: “One of the most mediocre films ever made” <<

We filmed Cloud Atlas with a hope, a dream, a lot of love and sincerity… But the filming itself, we were part of a larger whole. Fantastic people who worked hard to give the best of themselves on such a risky bet… This whole movie was such a risky endeavor that being a part of it was all the more magical“, he confided. If the film did not really meet its audience, true science fiction fans did not miss it. It is imperative to discover or rediscover.
