This year, the king cake will be even better than usual for a lucky resident Sister Cities : the pastry chef and chocolatier from Tréport Basil Fouquemberg has in fact decided to join forces with the Mersois jeweler Julien Toursel. A ring from Mersois will be hidden in a Tréportais pancake as a bean.

This beautiful idea was born from the meeting between two passionate artisans by their profession. To unite jewelry and pastry, they chose Epiphany for this project which highlights their know-how. “We have values that unite us, which are to do things ourselves,” explains Julien Toursel, who in his boutique in Mers-les-Bains offers a range of jewelry that he made himself. “We decided to win a ring worth €1,349. It’s a nice gift for whoever comes across it,” smiles the jeweler.

300 pancakes… or more

For Basil Fouquemberg, this beautiful gift should help sell more cakes. “I started making them last year, but only to order. This time, they will be on sale over the counter and I hope to sell 300 of them,” he explains.

Those who do not find the ring will be able to discover a bean in the shape of a chess piece in their cake. “I have 300 beans like these and I hope I don’t have any left on my hands. But if it works well and we need to make more pancakes, I am ready to work day and night to prepare them,” assures Basil Fouquemberg.

Between two pieces of advice to the jewelry store’s customers, Christophe Toursel, Julien’s father, slips in a few words about the project: “We want to highlight what is artisanal, those who work with their hands. The partnership therefore came about naturally, between two enthusiasts.”

If the project finds its audience this year, it should be renewed next year. And if for this first, the ring offered was not made in Mers-les-Bains due to lack of time, Julien Toursel will be able to create a piece of jewelry specially for Basil Fouquemberg’s cakes.

And the jeweler who does not want to disappoint anyone even announces that other prizes will be up for grabs for buyers of cakes, with other jewelry up for grabs for a total value of €500.

The galettes des rois will be on sale from December 26 in the Eden Picard boutique, at the foot of the funicular at Tréport. The winner of the ring will discover a winning token, to come and collect the jewel in the store.
