Larry Mullen Jr., drummer for the band U2, said he suffers from dyscalculia, a disease that impairs his ability to understand and use numbers.
U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. has revealed he has dyscalculia, a disorder that impairs the ability to understand and use numbers. During an interview given to Times Radiohe spoke for the first time on this subject.
“I always knew there was something wrong with the way I handled numbers.”he confided before adding: “I have difficulty with numbers. Recently I discovered that I have dyscalculia, a form of dyslexia. So I can’t count or add.”
A disabling disorder
This disorder, defined by the French Dys Federation, impacts the ability to calculate, count and memorize numerical facts. For Larry Mullen Jr., this particularly complicates his job as a musician.
“When people watch me play, they sometimes tell me that I look like I’m in pain. And it’s true: I’m in pain because I struggle to count bars. I had to develop techniques to do that, but it’s like climbing Everest”, explained the drummer.
