The work had done talk about her last year, and returns to the forefront. Found in the bell tower of the church of Saint-Cornier-des-Landes, commune of Tinchebray-Bocage (Orne)after having remained hidden there for more than a century, the table of Christ and the Samaritan woman had been presented in the competition for the largest Museum in France.
The objective of this competition? The financing of its restoration. “Unfortunately, the work did not win,” recalls Frédérique Roullier, deputy mayor of Saint-Cornier, during the last municipal council, Tuesday December 10, 2024. On the agenda, an item is devoted to the table.
“A long-standing project for Saint-Cornier”
From participation during the competition, the idea of restoring the work was not forgotten. “We had the work estimated by experts: the estimate amounts to €12,435.30 including tax,” presents the deputy mayor, announcing that the Fondation Sauvegarde de l’art français associates to the project. “She gives us a donation of around €4,000. »
Disappeared under dirt and humiditythe features of the work require significant meticulous work to regain their splendor. As a reminder, the table is a replica of Christ and the Samaritan woman of which the original signed Philippe de Champaigne is exhibited at the museum of Fine Arts of Caen (Calvados).
The restoration is close to our hearts, because then we would like the painting to be hung in the church to be admired by all.
“We know that this is a project long standing for Saint-Cornier. » It is with these words that Josette Porquet, as well as all the elected representatives of the council, voted in favor of the restoration of the painting.
To participate in financing, grants will be requested from the Heritage Foundation and the Orne departmental council.
