The prequel to the famous Disney classic: The Lion King
Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to The Lion King, and tells the adventures of Young Mufasa before he becomes one of the greatest kings of the Land of Lions. Jon Favreau’s first film (2019) grossed more than $1.6 billion at the global box office, setting the bar very high for Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). The director emphasizes: “ It’s different from The Lion King, but it will have the same energy. » Note that Mufasa: The Lion King is released in the 30th anniversary of the original animated film, The Lion King, released in 1994.
A star cast
Going back in time, this new adventure of The Lion King allows us to find characters dear to the hearts of spectators but also to introduce new faces. To do this, Beyoncé and Donald Glover reprise their roles as Nala and Simba, while Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé’s daughter for the first time in the cinema, lends her voice to Kiara (daughter of the royal couple), adding a real family connection to this new feature film. Aaron Pierre plays a charismatic and vibrant Mufasa. While Kelvin Harrison Jr. brings a touch of ambiguity and complexity to the character of Taka (Scar).
A unique visual and emotional experience
Combining live-action cinema techniques and photorealistic digital images, MUFASA: THE LION KING captures the richness and diversity of African panoramas. The film’s aesthetic is both stunning and surprising, showcasing the landscapes like never before, including even the snowy scenes. Barry Jenkins describes the story of Mufasa’s youth as a true cinematic journey: ” At the start of our film, our hero is taken far from the territory we know in THE LION KING. He drifts to the end of the continent and must find his way back. This gave us the opportunity to stage it in different environments and climates« .
The power of music
Continuing the tradition that made the animated classic, stage show and 2019 film dear to the hearts of audiences around the world, this new story is brought to life on the big screen primarily through music. Jenkins therefore notably collaborated with Lin-Manuel Miranda for original musical compositions, mixing modern influences with the epic sounds that characterize the universe of The Lion King. Note that Lin-Manuel Miranda already has hit songs in productions such as the Broadway musical “Hamilton”, Encanto: the fantastic Madrigal family, Moana: the legend of the end of the world and The Little Mermaid (2023).
Producer Adele Romanski notes on this subject: “Let’s be real: the songs from THE LION KING became hits. But Lin-Manuel Miranda is a musical genius and as soon as people hear the new songs he wrote for the film, they will join Elton John and Tim Rice in the pantheon of LION KING musical canons. »
