Trans Musicales: Defmaa Maadef, the feminist electroshock from Dakar

Defmaa Maadef, the new queens of afro-pop, defend their first album Oh Maliko at the 46th edition of Trans Musicales, the famous pioneering festival, which is held until December 8, 2024, in . The Senegalese female duo promises an electric shock in where nearly 60,000 festival-goers are expected.

Defmaa Maadef is the explosive sound of two thirty-something female rappers, full of self-deprecation and a huge dose of energy. Their names are Mamy Victory and Defa. In barely three years of existence, the tandem has established itself at lightning speed as a sure value on the contemporary West African scene.

Casual and excited

Between tight-fitting jumpsuits and improbable hairstyles, the appearances of the Dakar tandem, accompanied on stage by a DJ and a drummer, rarely leave anyone unmoved. And from the first notes, sweat is guaranteed.

These African warriors equipped with catchy titles carry the colors of feminism loud and clear in a symbiosis of wild dance and bewitching groove. The whole thing fuses Senegalese sabar, South African amapiano, Nigerian afro-beat and Angolan kuduro. Cherry on the beats electro: Defmaa Maadef sings in Wolof to liberate women from African conservatism.

New album Oh Maliko

Mamy Victory and Defa’s album Oh Maliko is published on their own independent label, simply named Defmaa Maadef and which has just been created recently. It must be said that they are not afraid or have a minute to lose and above all, they are stepping on the accelerator to open wide the windows of the new era of African music. And it’s mind-blowing!

The 46th edition of Trans Musicales de Rennes will be held until December 8, 2024 in Brittany.
