A letter that sounds like an end to non-receipt. This Thursday, December 5, 2024, the mayor of Saint-Nazaire David Samzun wrote to the president of the Regional Council Christelle Morançais to inform her that the City of Saint-Nazaire will not participate in the 2025 edition
from My Virtuoso Region. In the wake of the Folle Journee de Nantes, this program launched by the Region offers classical music concerts throughout the territory, high quality, while remaining accessible
. This will therefore not be the case in Saint-Nazaire next January.
“Without any consultation”
The decision of the Nazairian elected official owes nothing to chance. It is a response to the budget cuts decided by the president of the Regional Council which affects cultural structures. Drastic cuts which result in the pure and simple elimination of the subsidy as is the case for Escales or the Theater in Saint-Nazaire. This decision is the consequence of the financial decisions that you have made in recent months, of your manifest desire to specifically target cultural actors without any consultation with municipalities and intercommunities.
writes David Samzun to Christelle Morançais.
“It would neither be fair nor equitable to maintain our support for this meeting”
The Nazairian elected official criticizes the choices of the Region which abandons culture in the territories but retains its communication tools which showcase it as My Virtuoso Region
. Then the mayor of Saint-Nazaire decided: In this context, we refuse to support what is now more of a political communication operation than a cultural policy. It would in fact be neither fair nor equitable to maintain our support for this event even though regional subsidies are being removed from almost all of the cultural actors in Saint-Nazaire and its agglomeration.
