A survey carried out on behalf of the manufacturer ResMed reveals that 60% of French people use a screen (smartphone, tablet or television) in the 30 minutes before going to bed.

This rate increases with age, reaching 72% among people aged 65 and over, reflecting a certain dependence of seniors on screens.

In comparison, 43% of young adults aged 18 to 24 say they watch a screen less than 30 minutes before bed. This proportion increases to 60% among 25-34 year olds, 63% among 35-44 year olds, and 71% among 45-55 year olds.

The negative impact of screens before sleeping on sleep quality is increasingly better documented. Although factors other than the use of screens contribute to disturbed sleep, the survey notes that only 25% of French people surveyed say they sleep all night without interruption, while 42% wake up during the night, with a lack of sleep. disturbed.

In 2017, ANSES recalled that blue light from screens and brain activity linked to the use of social networks could delay falling asleep and prevent the relaxation necessary for restful sleep.

The Agency also highlighted the disruptive effects of biological rhythms and sleep due to even low exposure to blue light in the evening or at night.

It therefore recommended limiting this exposure, particularly in children, before bedtime and during the night.

A third of French people on the networks before falling asleep

62% of French people surveyed watch television before going to bed. Concerning social networks, 23% of French people say they consult them before sleeping, or use this time to read their emails or communicate with loved ones.

Among them, 9% check their work emails, a habit that is not conducive to stress reduction and sleep quality. This phenomenon is part of a broader context of hyperconnection.

The Observatory of Infobesity and Digital Collaboration revealed in 2023 that 31% of employees in were experiencing digital overload or “hyperconnection”, with between 50 and 150 evenings connected each year for professional reasons.

The use of screens before sleeping has thus extended to all age groups, no longer limited to adolescents. This behavior relegates calm and relaxing practices to the background, although they are essential for promoting restful sleep: only 3% of those surveyed practice soothing activities, such as yoga or meditation, before going to bed, but 27% of respondents say read before turning off the light.
