Born in 2001, Samba Ly, better known as “Capi”, is a young rapper who aims to become one of the greats in Senegalese hip-hop.
FOR MASSES – The year 2018 marks his entry into the Senegalese hip-hop scene. With his real name Samba Ly, the young man, native of Keur Massar plus, precisely in the city “Sotrac”, chose “Capi” as his pseudonym. An artist name to say that he remains the captain in the rap world. An armband that he dreams of wearing like one of his idols, Dip Doundou Guiss. The young person shows great self-sacrifice to climb the ladder in his field.
Born in 2001, Samba dropped out of third grade in college to focus entirely on rap. With a hoarse voice, a fluid gait and an American style of clothing, the young man, with a light complexion, medium height and blond hair, lives his passion to the fullest. “Since entering the rap world, I have worked tirelessly to achieve my goals. To do this, you will need to be calm and well surrounded. In rap, I’m starting to gain more and more experience. I participated in several competitions. Sometimes I win and when I lose, I always find a way to come back stronger,” he says.
Maman Mbaye, a member of his staff, evokes a young person who lives solely for rap. According to him, “Capi”‘s love for this musical genre began in school activities during which little Samba hosted the opening acts. “He has immense talent and that is why we support him so that he can raise his level as far as possible,” she emphasizes.
In his career as a young rapper, “Capi” started in a group called Saraba club. It was in this label that he took his first steps in rap. Now, he plays solo with a staff made up of young people.
After a year of solo career, the rapper recently released three tracks including “Douma national”. For the month of December, he is preparing a new single which, according to him, will be a hit.
In Keur Massar, the young rapper displays all his talent during rap competitions. This is how it was co-opted by the “Vibes Empire” group among the best revelations in this department of the Dakar region. The final of this competition will be played at the African Renaissance Monument. The young rapper has high hopes of being a finalist. “I will do my best to reach the final. I have passion, ambition and talent. So we still have to work very hard,” he explains.
On December 28, 2024, “Capi” and his entourage plan to organize a major concert at the Bread Festival in Keur Massar. For him, the lack of resources means that local rap is struggling to take off. However, he intends to move heaven and earth to achieve his goal which is the expansion of rap in his locality. The latter “is full of talent, but we lack the means to express ourselves in order to be able to show our talent to the whole world,” he regrets.
