While for most people, video games are a tool for entertainment, some make a career out of it. But did you know that there was a day when an entire country rallied around a very particular title, simply to survive? We present this story, as improbable as it is terrifying, in this JV Legends!

A little history

Although the information has been little reported in our country, you should know that in the 2010s, Venezuela has also been hit by an economic crisis. Yet sitting on a gigantic oil reserve which practically single-handedly powered its economy, a sudden drop in demand quickly put the country in a more than delicate position. The result: a more than controversial political climate and one of the most devastating economic crises the world has known in the last 50 years.

In just 3 years, the local currency – the Bolivar – has been so devalued that it is almost necessary wheelbarrows of bills for a single loaf of bread. At that time, 96% of the population fell below the poverty line, and 70% below the extreme poverty line and affected by famine. The country collapsed and experienced a brain drain, in search of a more stable life outside Venezuelan borders. In total, more than 4.6 million people left for neighboring states. Finally, the bolivar was abandoned, replaced by the dollar – then more stable – and The average salary is between $4 and $10 per month. A situation which will however be turned upside down thanks to a game which will change everything: Runescape.

Eldorado

If you’ve ever played an MMO, you’ve probably seen ads for selling virtual currency for real money in chat channels. These are called “goldfarmers” – literally gold prospector – namely people who go out of their way to generate gold in large quantities to then resell it for real money. And while this is obviously a completely illegal practice, since it distorts the balance of the gaming market, it generates a lot of profits. So much so that on Runescape, It is possible to make about 50 cents an hour. If you pay attention to numbers, you get the idea. When you usually earn just $4 to $10 a month, The game offers an unprecedented opportunity.

The word then circulates in families and groups of friends. Runescape is an effective way to generate enough money to eat and finance a departure for other horizons. The choice of this particular MMO is also not insignificant. Indeed, it is capable of running even on the oldest machines. Thus, each computer, phone and tablet is put to contribution since each terminal counts to generate money, and everyone is getting involved! Young and old, every member of the family becomes a goldfarmer. In total, nearly 1.8 million Venezuelans played Runescape. But one day, poof… Nothing. In every house, it is incomprehension, quickly replaced by fear that takes over. To find out the reason for this blackout, don’t hesitate to consult our JV Legends available at the top of the page!
