At the beginning of October, an article from our colleagues in Le Monde cast doubt on the creation of the press cartoon house in Paris. The project then seemed to be at a standstill. From there to rekindle the hope of finally seeing it exported to Saint-Just-le-Martel and Limoges? Not really. But the little flame, if it remained, has just been extinguished by the Minister of Culture. In a press release, Rachida Dati confirms the opening of this Parisian house for 2027, silencing doubts about the sustainability of the project.
“The Minister also wants, almost ten years after the attack of January 7, 2015 against Charlie Hebdo, the House of Press Cartoons to be a tribute from the Republic to the murdered victims for having defended without ever weakening and in the service of all citizens the cause of freedom[…] The building intended to house the Press Cartoon House, located in the sixth arrondissement of Paris, has a surface area of 1,500 m². Project management was delegated by the Ministry of Culture to the Operator of Cultural Heritage and Real Estate Projects (OPPIC).
The ministry also confirms the three main missions of the structure: heritage, creation and transmission.
“Not really a scoop” for Guy Hennequin, co-president of the caricature and press cartoon show of Saint-Just-le-Martel, who has mourned his death for a long time. Despite everything, he specifies that a regional project is about to see the light of day in Limoges. Once envisaged in the former Jidé factory, owned by the Region, the project is in the process of being reoriented.
“Obviously, the initial version was too expensive and in the economic context, the Region should turn to something more modest, avenue Émile Labussière.”
The opening of this center is also planned for 2027. It will bring together the press cartoon house of Saint-Just, the cinema library and the Francophonies. “This regional project is complementary to the Parisian house. It will have the same missions: heritage with exhibitions and the conservation of numerous documents, creative, with artist residencies and transmission with workshops for schools.”further specifies Guy Hennequin.
