The lifeless body of independent journalist Marine Vlahovic was found on the roof terrace of her Marseille apartment on the morning of Monday, November 25. She was 39 years old.
Marine had been a correspondent for several French-speaking radio stations, and in particular RFI and Radio France, in Ramallah, in the West Bank, from 2016 to 2019. From her experience, she drew her formidable Penpal notebooks broadcast on Arte Radio — a funny, sensitive and critical chronicle of the beauty and limits of the great information factory. These Notebooks have also earned her the prize of the Scam Documentary Podcast Prize in 2021.
Marine then returned to France where she settled in Marseille, attracted as always by the Mediterranean. After the massacres of October 7, 2023, following which Israel began the still ongoing war against Gaza, she tried to go there, in vain. She was stuck in Cairo.
In recent months, she had not stopped relaying the voices of her fellow Gazan journalists, while trying to send them packages of basic necessities. After 15 years in the profession, disgusted by the media treatment of the war in Gaza by the French media, she had not requested the renewal of her press card, note Telerama.
A traveling companion from Reporterre
Marine Vlahovic has frequently collaborated with Reporterre in 2015 and 2016, before these years of correspondence in the Middle East. She then lived in Toulouse, and followed the environmental struggles for us there and also the fight of Algerian citizens against shale gas.
She also carried out, with Elsa Souchay, one of the most important investigations in the young history of Reporterrehighlighting the responsibility of the gendarmes and their hierarchy in the death of the young environmental activist Rémi Fraisse, in 2014.
« She had integrity, a sense of justice and impeccable journalism.remembers her friend Elsa Souchay. She tackled subjects that not many people had the courage to do and never gave up on a cause that seemed just to her, she emphasizes. She was very competent, it was a joy to work and share moments with her, she was a golden person. »
Last June, it was with joy that Hervé Kempf, editorial director of Reporterrehad spoken with Marine. She still had the same energy and notably helped a family of Gazan friends, who had lost their four children in an Israeli bombing, to reach France. « We had discussed the possibility of finding correspondents in Gaza to tell the story of the genocide »he says.
It is with great sorrow that Reporterre learned of Marine’s death. The entire team sends its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
