Céret Fair: the arenas bought by the town hall to make them a cultural venue that is lively all year round

It is an emblematic place for the people of Céret, but not only… The Céret arenas were bought by the municipality at the end of June, just before the Feria. This year, it takes place on weekend of July 5-7The event attracts around 50,000 people every year.

“For a long time now, it has not been alive, except for bullfighting”

A transaction of 420,000 euros with the idea of giving new life to the arenas, outside of the Feria, by organizing shows, concerts the rest of the year. Currently, they are only used three days a year. “I am delightedsays Maguy, a long-time resident, I know that the city hall went to see other cities that had bought arenas. I saw the photos of what they had done with them, it’s great! We can cover them, we’ll be able to enjoy them all the time. When I was young, we had singers all the time: Claude Francois, Charles Aznavour, Dalida, Johnny Hallyday. For a long time now, it has not been alive, except for bullfighting.”

With its 3.500 placesthere is a lot of potential for Michel Coste, the mayor of Céret. This is a tool that is lacking in the Tech Valley, it must be used all year round, he says. There will be bullfighting shows, in Céret it is part of the DNA, but also the jazz festival, Jazz en Tech which wants to relocate some of its concerts to the arenas. We will also be able to use them for sports competitions. It is a tool for economic, artistic and cultural development that is lacking in the Vallespir territory.”

Before all that can be done, the arenas need a makeover. They are 102 years old, the structure has moved, the seating is no longer up to standard and the city also wants to be able to cover them for the winter. All this represents a big investment: three to four million euros of work according to the mayor. Patrick Puigmal, an opposition member, is afraid that the budget will explode.I am very afraid that the mayor will undertake colossal works. In Parentis (Landes), the situation was the same and the works exceeded five million euros. I keep reminding him that all this is public money, we must be vigilant.“This work will take several years.
