Since November 18, there has been a little museum feel in the city center of Libourne. The city exhibits masterpieces by certain great painters on bus shelters, “lollipop” advertising panels or construction sites. An operation called “Beauty will save the world”, launched by the city of Saint-Dizier (Haute-Marne) in 2021, in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, while museums and places of culture were closed. 32 municipalities are participating this year, including Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), Aubervilliers (Seine-Saint-Denis), Bourges (Cher), Châteauroux (Indre), Laval (Mayenne) and Saint-Raphaël (Var).
A 4×3 above the swimming pool
In Libourne, the most impressive achievement is found above the Calinésie ponds, the city’s aquatic center: a 4×3 meter panel on which several works parade. “If there is one place where you don’t expect to see a work of art, it’s in a swimming pool. It’s the place that is for me the most disruptive, the most unexpected, in a moment when we come to swim, but where it is often accompanied by a contemplative moment”, describes the mayor of Libourne Philippe Buisson.
In town, Libourne residents can admire “Boats on the beach at Etretat”by Claude Monet, “The Church of Auvers-sur-Oise, seen from the apse”, by Vincent Van Gogh or “Dance in the countryside”, by Auguste Renoir.

With this operation, Philippe Buisson expresses his ambition “to bring beauty, to bring art to a public that does not often pass through the doors of a museum. It is an extremely simple initiative but which has the merit of existing and of giving happiness, to bring a smile, we create a moment of emotion. among passers-by, he rejoices. On the financial side, the mayor of Libourne estimates the amount of the operation at 2,000 euros, spent with the Grand Palais for the right to reproduce the works or on the purchase of advertising space. The operation ends this Tuesday, December 3.
