A show aimed at young people and their families, hosted by the Ateliers des arts, La surprise du chef is entitled to three performances at the theater. Before the premieres planned for today, a look back at this initiative which continues to appeal to the public.
It is always a highly anticipated event for the students of the Ateliers des arts, but not only that: over the course of the shows, La surprise du chef has managed to carve out a special place for itself in the cultural calendar and has established itself as an event that attracts a large audience. As proof, the three performances of this show, offered for the first time in 2008, are almost sold out, each bringing together no less than 450 people.
This new Chef’s Surprise, under the direction of Raphaël Brunon and Richard Angénieux, gives pride of place to everything: drinking, blues, heart, lightning, cold, mouth… These “moments where everything shifts, where destiny strikes, where life takes an unexpected turn”, as Claire Monteillard of the conservatory explains. We can’t reveal everything, because it’s about coming to the theater without knowing what to expect.
But one principle prevails: each piece has its own painting. With music on the program of course, but also text and dance. We can cite among others: Gonna fly now by Bill Conti or The boxer in love by Arthur H, Toulouse by Claude Nougaro, The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky…
A unifying event
“The chef’s surprise” is a unifying show which mobilizes the teaching team, all disciplines combined, under the sign of the diversity of repertoires and aesthetics.
The teachers have rehearsed every Tuesday morning since September. In the end, this project creates great team cohesion. The Conservatoire de l’Agglomération du Puy-en-Velay has 74 employees, including around sixty teachers.
It is also an opportunity for the public to discover on stage all the disciplines that make up the Ateliers des arts: music, dance, theater and visual arts. For example, Carole Baud, who teaches theater, is responsible for the direction, while the decor was entrusted to the visual arts teachers.
Finally, let us conclude that The Chef’s Surprise has its counterpart in The Students’ Surprise: this is the opportunity given to young volunteers from the conservatory to create a show in total autonomy combining music, dance, theater and visual arts.
