Political thriller which caused a sensation during its first season in 2023, the series “The Diplomat” created by Debora Cahn (“At the White House”, “Homeland”), with Keri Russell in the title role, is back on Netflix since October 31 with six episodes as intense as ever.
Plots in high places, diplomatic issues, manipulations, twists and turns of all kinds, the second season of the series “The Diplomat” retains all the ingredients that made it successful in 2023.
We find actress Keri Russell (“The Americans”) in her role as Kate Wyler, ambassador of the United States to London, and the plot picks up exactly where the first season left off, with the explosion of a car bomb in the heart of the British capital.
A plot at the heart of British power
Suspecting the English Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) of being involved in this attack and in the one which hit an aircraft carrier during the previous season, the ambassador leads the investigation with the help of Eidra Park ( Ali Ahn), CIA station chief.
They seek to foil a plot that seems to be brewing at the heart of British power. And on the heart side, her marriage to Hal Wyle (Rufus Sewell), a former ambassador who gets involved a little too much in his work, is still struggling. As for his relationship with British Foreign Minister Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), it remains as confused and ambiguous as ever.
During the first season, we also learned that if the American had been sent to London, it was mainly to test her ability to replace the vice-president of the United States Grace Pen, threatened with a scandal. In this new season, this character played by the excellent Allison Janney (“At the White House”) gains momentum and forms a captivating duo with the heroine in the final episodes.

A major final twist
Created and co-written by Debora Cahn (“At La Maison-Blanche”, “Homeland”), “La diplomatte” continues its momentum with a tense staging and dense writing. But be careful, the dialogues move quickly and the plot remains complicated. It is essential to have seen or even rewatched the first season before starting.
After many twists and turns, this second season offers an even more impressive finale than the one that ended the previous one. In an interview given to the newspaper Variety, Ato Essandoh who plays the character of Stuart Heyford (chief of staff of the American embassy in London) recounts the reading session during which he discovered this ending: “I got up, I “I took the script and threw it across the room,” he remembers. “You see that moment in the movies, when you hear ‘Luke, I’m your father’?
A cliffhanger which redistributes all the cards and which opens the way to a third season already confirmed.
