In just 10 days, Pixar’s new animated feature film took the top position at the global box office. A superb success which could do good for the industry, especially in view of the first part of the year, where very few productions were able to exceed expectations at the box office.

Dune 2 finally surpassed

After 4 months of unchallenged domination at the head of the world box office, Dune 2’s score has finally been beaten. As for the culprit, he responds to the name of Vice-Versa 2, the latest production from Pixar Studios. Released on June 14 in the United States, it only took around ten days for this film to break the current year’s admissions records.

At the same time, with a box office score that already reaches more than $724 million, Dune Part Two couldn’t really compete. As a reminder, Denis Villeneuve’s latest release concluded its theatrical release with a completely honorable score of $711 million. That is almost 150 million more than its former runner-up, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which therefore concludes the new podium. But what is most impressive is the precocity of the results of Vice-Versa 2. The figures reached are crazy, even though the first week of operation is not over in certain international markets, such as France, China or Brazil.

Denis Villeneuve relieved

While one might think the guy is frustrated at losing his first place, it’s a safe bet that Denis Villeneuve is more relieved than anything else by the event. This is indeed what some of his statements suggest, notably when the Canadian filmmaker said “disappointed to still be number one”on the occasion of Academy Icon Awards. He also explained that he “hoped to see other box office successes”, a legitimate and logical fear when we know how many the filmmaker is concerned by the vitality of the industry in its entirety.

Thus, after a first part of the year where many blockbusters have failed to meet expectationswe hope that the examples of success at Vice-Versa or at Dune will multiply in this second half of 2024. To do this, we will have to hope that the most anticipated films of this end of year confirm expectations and be successful in theaters. Among them, Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus et Joker – Folie à deux obviously. But also other less anticipated feature films, which, we hope, will be able to create a surprise and bring as many people as possible into theaters. Waiting for, Vice-Versa 2 has been available in French cinemas since June 19.
