In 2022, Page Hurwitz bringing together legends of American humor on the stage of the Greek Theater in Los Angeles for a fabulous and hilarious queer evening. “Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration”, also available on Netflix, serves as the basis for “Outstanding: A comedy Revolution”, which traces the history of queer representation in the world of comedy.

Rosie O’Donnell, Lily Tomlin, Eddie Izzard or Joel Kim Booster: big names in Anglo-Saxon humor speak in front of the camera and tell stories behind the scenes of the world of humor. Interspersed with extracts from broadcasts or archive images, the documentary parallels their personal experience with the history of the fight for the rights of queer people in the United States.

From the wind of freedom that blew through the 1920s, to the libertarian revolution of the 1970s, through the tragedy of the AIDS epidemic: throughout the decades, the queer community has had to face a number of challenges, hope, disappointment. On stage, actors try to shed a little light on the public’s daily life. With jokes and witticisms, they lay themselves bare, exposing themselves to everyone’s eyes.

The question then arises: is it possible to be openly queer in the world of humor? If, at present, the answer is mainly positive, nothing is ever really certain. Robin Tyler or Margaret Cho know this well and talk about the negative impact that coming out of the closet had on their career. But in adversity, a sense of community and camaraderie shines through the screen.

With these extracts from personal life, “Outstanding: A comedy Revolution” describes years of fights for equality, humor to the point, laughter in armor. Particularly inspiring, the documentary will be especially so for an American or Americanophile audience. We can only hope to one day be able to discover a project of this scale in Europe and thus discover our queer history with humor.
