Standoff with the elected officials of the city of Carhaix, Paris Olympics, drop in purchasing power… The Breton festival, which is to take place from July 11 to 14, is seriously questioning its future.

Will the Vieilles Charrues soon be out of use? The economic crisis, the increase in artists’ fees, the Paris Olympics and the recurring problems with the Carhaix town hall… This year, the Breton festival, created in 1992, is in turmoil. According to the event organizers, the 2024 edition “could well be the last.

Less than a month before their launch, Vieilles Charrues still have tickets on sale for Thursday July 11, Saturday 13 and Sunday July 14. The Friday evening, which welcomes PJ Harvey and Sting, is sold out. Two, three and four day packages as well. If many tickets are still available, it is partly because of “the decline in the purchasing power of the French”estimates Jérôme Tréhorel, the director of the event.

Although they take place far from the capital, the Vieilles Charrues also suffer “concomitance with the Olympic Games”he explains again. “Festival-goers who came for three or four days now only come for a day or two. Maybe they go to other festivals or attend the Olympics, I don’t know. In any case, festival-goers tend to make last-minute purchases. The Olympics are very demanding in terms of personnel and equipment and their strong media power doesn’t help matters. There are fewer places for festivals.»

Furthermore, the organizers of Vieilles Charrues are in the middle of a fight against the elected officials of the Carhaix town hall. “Loss of essential land”, “pre-emption of our future offices”, “surprise tax of almost 400,000 euros”… The festival management detailed on social networks the criticisms they made of the municipality. For his part, Christian Troadec, the mayor of Carhaix and president of Poher community (an intercommunal commission for accessibility for disabled people) estimated that the management of the festival was “politics and blackmail”. “We still have meetings next weekcontinues Jérôme Tréhorel. But I worry about the future of Vieilles Charrues.”

Lollapalooza, Greenland, Electrobeach…

Les Vieilles Charrues are not the only ones to suffer from the economic crisis and the Olympic Games. In March, the Parisian festival Lollapalooza was forced to cancel its 2024 edition, the event usually taking place in mid-July. On social networks, the organizers of Lollapalooza did not explicitly mention the Olympics but still stressed that it would be “impossible” for them to welcome “in the best conditions [….] fans, artists and partners”.

The Greenland Festival and the Electrobeach, both located in the Pyrénées-Orientales, have also canceled their 2024 edition. The first saw its five headliners withdraw a few days before the launch, all accusing the event of not not respect established contracts. The second only explained that he faced “insurmountable technical constraints, combined with complex administrative circumstances”.

“We have the impression that festivals are facing organizational realities that are quite strongnotes Jean-Paul Roland, director of the Eurockéennes de Belfort. The fees of international artists are increasing. Now it also affects French artists, particularly in hip-hop.”

But less than a month before their launch, the Eurockéennes, which will take place from July 4 to 7, are an exception. Sunday is full. Nothing surprising when we know that the festival has programmed David Guetta, a French DJ with an international aura, who has more than 75 million listeners on Spotify. “We have never had so many entries on this datewelcomes Jean-Paul Roland. We are starting to sell the last tickets for Friday and Saturday but we are not worried, in the last month we can sell up to 40,000 tickets..
