On the sidelines of the Dakar Biennial of Contemporary African Art which started in Dakar on November 7, the Cheikh Hamidou Kane Digital University (Un-Chk), through the interdisciplinary research team Literature, Art and Heritage Club ( Clap) and the Pole of Innovation and Expertise for Development (Pied), organized a symposium on museums on November 9 and 10, 2024. This meeting saw the participation of the Nigerian writer and Nobel Prize for Literature Wole Soyinka. The writer moderated the inaugural conference on: “The place of museums in the transmission of heritage.” This scientific meeting on contemporary art, co-sponsored by the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and NYU Abu Dhabi, aims, according to a press release from the organizers, “to rethink the management of museum collections to integrate perspectives of restitution and repair of works of art, promoting a more inclusive and universal approach. Thus, eminent researchers took part in this meeting to examine new approaches to museums in an era of increased pressure, to reposition collections beyond a fixed definition of “beauty” according to one perspective: that of the conqueror , of the colonizer, of the powerful. “Discussions around beauty, repair, archives, patronage and strengthening institutions” punctuated these two days. The symposium brought together artists, scholars, curators, patrons, caretakers and museum stakeholders through a dynamic series of panel discussions, discussions, and performances. It was about thinking together about the future of the museum.
