DAK’ART OPENS ITS BIENNIAL

The official opening ceremony of the 15e edition of the Dakar Contemporary African Biennial (Dak’art) took place this morning at the Grand Théâtre National, in the presence of the President of the Republic as well as several personalities. This biennial will take place from November 7 to December 7, 2024, initially scheduled for May, May 16 to June 16, reported the APS

For the artistic director, Salimata Diop, also a Franco-Senegalese curator and art critic, the choice of “The Wake (literally means, the awakening, the wake)” is to “link the past and the future in their conferring equal importance.

She explains that the theme is partially inspired by the work +In the Wake: On Blackness and Black Being+ by Professor Christina Sharpe which examines the black condition, its literary, visual and artistic representations, in relation to the notions of exhumation, of mourning and heartbreak.

The event took place in the presence of members of the government, the diplomatic corps accredited to Dakar and representatives of international institutions. Also note that the United States and Cape Verde are the guest countries of honor.

This opening was a moment for local cultural events to show their talent such as “assiko” and the sounds of the south of the country, as well as the demonstrations of supporters of the national team while welcoming the President of the Republic.
