A few weeks after learning that a new novel set in the universe of The Witcher was in anticipation, CD Projekt Red makes an announcement that risks giving Netflix a cold sweat.
The Witcher: new projects are coming
the saga The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski is one of the most popular works among fantasy fans. Adapted in the form of video games produced by CD Projekt Red which have won multiple awards, the adventures of Geralt De Riv hit the small screen with the release of the series The Witcher produced by Netflix.
However, this television adaptation is, to say the least, disapproved by many fans, who criticize it for not respecting the original work of Andrzej Sapkowski, but also for an artistic direction which does not live up to the path traced by Game of Thrones. Actor Henry Cavill, a great admirer of literary work and video games, also participated in these criticisms, which motivated his departure from the series. He is replaced by Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, who will play the Witcher from season 4 for the last two batches of episodes.
While CD Projekt Red announced the development of a fourth game The Witcher of which Geralt would not be the protagonist, the American media Game Rant found a job offer posted by the Polish studio with the aim of recruiting English-speaking writers for comics, films and TV series. Taking into account the fact that the economy of CD Projekt Red is primarily based on The Witcher et Cyberpunk 2077it is not utopian to think that the studio intends to develop series and films set in the dark fantasy universe of Andrzej Sapkowski.
So obviously CD Projekt Red could partner with Netflix as they have done in the past, notably with the Japanese animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersthese new projects – if they exist – could be seen as a formidable admission of failure on the part of the SVOD leader. Moreover, in the absence of an official announcement from CD Projekt, we do not yet know whether these potential films and series will be live action or animated. Indeed, under the aegis of Netflix, The Witcher was adapted into an animated film with The Nightmare of the Wolf et Sirens of the Deep. The latter is expected on February 11, 2025.
