Rabat – The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI) celebrated, Monday in Rabat, the tenth anniversary of its creation during an official ceremony, marked by the presence of a host of personalities from the cultural and diplomatic world and economical.
In a statement to the press, the president of the National Foundation of Museums (FNM), Mehdi Qotbi, welcomed the Royal Will to make culture a real lever for human, social and economic development. “His Majesty the King has given an invaluable boost to culture and museums. It is thanks to this Vision that Morocco is, today, cited as an example,” he declared.
The Foundation has carried out “remarkable work”, organizing, in particular, many exhibitions dedicated to great Moroccan artists such as Cherkaoui and Gharbaoui, as well as international figures such as Picasso, Giacometti, Monet and Renoir.
Seeing these prestigious names exhibited here in Morocco is a dream come true that we owe to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, added Mr. Qotbi.
For his part, the director of the museum, Abdelaziz Idrissi, stressed that this celebration marks “ten years of hard work” since the inauguration of the museum by the Sovereign in 2014.
This journey has allowed Morocco to “establish itself on the artistic scene”, the museum having hosted more than thirty-five exhibitions by Moroccan and international artists, thus contributing to the “democratization of culture”, he said. noted.
Mr. Amin Benjelloun Touimi, Managing Director of the Barid Al-Maghrib Group, expressed his pride in supporting this milestone through the unveiling of the special issue of a commemorative stamp in honor of the tenth anniversary of the museum.
This commemorative postage stamp, entitled “10 years – Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art”, highlights the museum square and the emblematic Final Accord sculpture by Arman, representing a broken piano. It joins the philatelic collection dedicated to the visual arts, already including stamps honoring the Giacometti Retrospective (2016), Face à Picasso (2017) and The Colors of Impressionism (2019) exhibitions.
At the end of the ceremony, the FNM signed an agreement with the Orange Morocco Foundation, represented by its general director, Hendrik Kasteel, for the digitalization of the museum. This agreement provides, among other things, for the digitization of exhibitions, the establishment of online ticketing and the development of a mobile application.
The MMVI stands out as the first Moroccan museum institution dedicated exclusively to modern and contemporary arts, while being the first in the Kingdom to meet international museum standards.
