Some curious people got a look on social networks. And a few lucky people were able to watch behind the scenes in Dieppe (Seine-Maritime).
The film crew of thecar show Top Gear of the RMC Découverte channel came to produce, from Monday October 28 to Thursday October 31, 2024, the first episode of its new season.
The French show, which has existed since 2015, is a derivative of the British version: it offers tests and challenges behind the wheel of luxury, sports or crazy cars.
Filming often takes place in special environments and guests can sometimes be put to the test over a timed period.
A show with English sauce
For this first episode filmed in Dieppe, the theme of the show is England, “because we are an English franchise,” explains Walid Bouarab, the editor-in-chief of Top Gear. Our three new presenters must be worthy representatives of Top Gear and the British crown.”
The production company chose Dieppe “because it’s a meaningful filming location. We are facing England. There are nice settings and we are by the sea,” continues the editor-in-chief.
The three hosts, Akram, POG and Franck my life, put on their best English outfit for the occasion!
A trio to replace Crankshaft
For this new season, the RMC Découverte channel has revealed its new casting for the show Top Gear. The duo of YouTubers Vilebrequin gives way to François Dequiqt, aka POG, Franck Galiègue, aka Franck my life, and Akram Ojjeh Junior. POG makes YouTube videos and is an influencer in the automotive industry. He is followed by more than a million people. Franck my life has a movie car museum in Étréchy, in the Paris region. It is said to have one of the largest collections of cinema cars in Europe. He has in his possession real vehicles which were used during filming. He also posts videos on YouTube and is followed by nearly 450,000 people. Finally, Akram is also an automotive YouTuber followed by nearly a million people. He owns many vehicles and regularly makes videos to present his subscribers’ automobiles.
They each came with a British car from their collection “to represent the perfect Englishman”, laughs Walid Bouarab.
Akram chose a Range Rover with a V8 engine.
POG, a supercar, a McLaren 675 LT spider.
Finally, Franck my life opted for a MG ZTT break“a model produced in less than twenty copies worldwide with a V8 engine from a Ford Mustang”, indicates Martin, a fan of the show and who carefully follows the news from the three presenters.
Three vehicles which have absolutely nothing to do with each other, but which will nevertheless be subjected to the same tests. They will notably be judged by the Franco-British comedian Paul Taylor.
The show was filmed on the Quai du Maroc, next to the fruit terminal of the port of Dieppe, at the Saint-Valery-en-Caux aerodrome and at La Chaussée.
The three presenters compete against each other and we were able to attend the Dieppe event.
A roundabout test
This Tuesday, October 29, the film crew made up of nearly twenty people set up their cameras on the Quai du Maroc. Some employees of the port of Dieppe recognized the McLaren of one of the presenters. A nice surprise for them.
“We were not at all aware that there was a filming,” says one of them who follows automotive news. Everyone wanted to watch the filming for a few minutes.
While waiting for the “stars” to arrive, each vehicle has been carefully prepared. Mathieu works with Stéphan for the sound team.
A pleasure for him: “Top Gear is fun, it’s a great team and it’s nice to meet again.” His mission: to install the equipment “to have sound in and outside the cars”.
Several small Go pro cameras were placed on the vehicle doors, so as not to miss anything. Once the animators are there, the few spectators are invited to move away from the track.
About fifty meters away, the filming begins. Some people are getting impatient, they can only wait for one thing: to see the vehicles in action.
It’s done: at 4:20 p.m., the first car sets off for its challenge. This is the McLaren. It gets the ball rolling and its driver must cross some sort of roundabouts, in the English style, as quickly as possible.
The McLaren’s engine purrs, tires screech and smoke billows from the ground. The spectacle is striking, both from an audio and visual point of view: the driver almost collided with another vehicle at the end of his lap!
Then, it’s time for the two other vehicles for the same event. Before two other events which were filmed in Saint-Valery-en-Caux and La Chaussée. But to discover them, we will have to wait until first half of 2025 for the broadcast of the show.
Top Gear show, on the RMC Découverte channel (TNT channel 24). Release planned for the first quarter of 2025.
