Double blow on the island of Nantes for contemporary art! At the Hab gallery, we can currently admire the funny statues signed by the young Brest artist Caroline Mesquita: cats, birds and brass characters, life-size, await the individual in the detours of a scenography revolving around the architecture, the water element and its color, a blue verdigris obtained by oxidation.

It’s original, pleasing to the eye and there’s even a fun eyecup device where “zyeuter” self-portrait videos made in stop motionwhich are reminiscent of the creations of Pierrick Sorin (whose current exhibition at the arts museum is also worth a visit).

Visitors strolling through the premises will be surprised and delighted by this showcase of modern and fuss-free statuary art, continuing the edition of Voyage à Nantes 2023. CuCo & Co, the title of this exhibition, makes reference to the chemical formulation of rusty brass… While sounding like ” cuckoo “, report to the owl birds of this extraordinary bestiary, visible all summer, at the Hab Galerie, 21, quai des Antilles, in Nantes.

A foam motorcycle larger than life

Sculptures, animals (a red rhino and pigeons “badly done” by the admission of the artist, who does not take himself seriously despite a recognized and obvious talent “represent the world”): it is the work of Xavier Veilhan, 63 years old.

It also evokes a childish universe, with mobiles whose shape varies by the action of the air element, a painting made of Kapla briquettes arranged in shades of blue with a pixel effect, or with this foam motorcycle, which we would swear that it is a life-size toy. Single storey is a ” happy best of » of his work, on view until September at the Frac de Nantes, 21, quai des Antilles, in Nantes.
